Japan Airlines‘s plane collided with a smaller coastguard aircraft when the plane landed on the runway at Haneda airport. Details
Japan Airlines Flight 516 departed from Sapporo’s New Chitose airport at 16:00 (local time) and landed at Haneda at 17:46 (local time). Sapporo is a northern Japanese city. The plane carried 379 passengers. The plane landed normally, according to the pilots, and the pilots detected no sign of another aircraft.
The Incident
The Airbus A350-900 ignited after colliding with an earthquake relief aircraft on the runway. “I felt a boom like we had hit something and jerked upward the moment we landed,“ a passenger reported. “I saw sparks outside the window, and the cabin filled with gas and smoke.“ The Coast Guard aircraft had 6 people in it, of which 5 died at the moment. The pilot was injured. A video showed the plane burning like a fireball.
Evacuation
Footage showed passengers escaping via an evacuation slide and running to safety. All 379 passengers, including 8 children under 2 years, were evacuated. Safety experts praised the crew for safely evacuating all the passengers. All runways were closed after the incident, stopping travel plans for thousands of passengers.
“We want to assure you that all passengers and crew on our flight were safely evacuated. Our thoughts and prayers are with the deceased members of the Japan coastguard“, a Japan Airline statement said.
Four of the passengers were taken to hospital for their injuries. Approximately 14 of the passengers received minor injuries.
