A 3rd Dune movie is now in development, but it probably won’t release anytime soon.

Denis Villeneuve, the legendary director responsible for movies like ‘Prisoners’ and ‘Blade Runner 2049’ and, of course, the science fiction hits, Dune Part 1 and 2 is set to direct yet another addition to the hit science fiction franchise. According to Deadline and Entertainment Weekly, the director will be able to fulfill his lifelong dream of adapting Frank Herbert’s Dune: Messiah to the big screen, as he did to the original novel.

Villeneuve has repeatedly expressed his desire to adapt the 2nd Dune novel as a film in the past. “I always envisioned three movies,” Villeneuve told EW. “It’s not that I want to do a franchise, but this is Dune, and Dune is a huge story. In order to honor it, I think you would need at least three movies. That would be the dream. To follow Paul Atreides and his full arc would be nice.”

Deadline reported that director Denis Villeneuve and Legendary are developing the movie “as the conclusion of the trilogy.” The movie is currently only in early development, and most likely won’t release for at least a few years. It however, is a huge step forward as the last statement Villeneuve made on the matter was that he wouldn’t adapt it unless he had a worthy script.

After all, there is so much of Paul Atreides’ story still to tell. The titular character has only just realised his full power, and in Dune: Messiah, his power will have considerably grown from the first two movies. Villeneuve is also set to direct a Nuclear War movie for his next project, which further suggests that it will be a while before we get to go to theaters to see the film.

“I have four projects on the table currently. One of them is a secret project that I cannot talk about right now, but that needs to see the light of day quite quickly. So it would be a good idea to do something in between projects, before tackling Dune Messiah and Cleopatra,” said Villeneuve, in March. “All these projects are still being written, so we’ll see where they go, but I have no control over that.”

Dune has already become a billion dollar franchise, with Dune: Part Two having currently grossed over $600 million at the box office.
