Warner Bros. is once again returning to it’s hit sci-fi franchise, The Matrix.

It will be the first installment in the franchise that won’t involve the Wachowski siblings, Lana and Lily Wachowski. Instead, the directorial powers will be taken on by ‘Cabin in the Woods’ and ‘Bad Times’ director as well as screenwriter for ‘The Martian’, Drew Goddard. However, Lana Wachowski will still be an executive producer for the new project.

“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” said Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman, according to Hollywood Reporter. Warner Bros. executives have expressed their utmost trust and faith in Goddard to do justice to the iconic franchise.

The Matrix, which released about 25 years ago, took the world by storm and is considered one of the greatest science fiction movies ever created. While the following installments, especially the recent 4th installment, may not have warranted the same hype as the original, audiences will still return to theaters to see the charming Keanu Reeves as Neo once again.

The original movie, introduced mind-warping concepts that had never before been adapted to screen such as the idea of “bullet time” as a special effect concept. This earned the movie multiple Academy Awards for best visual effects, editing, sound and sound editing. The movie grossed about $467 million worldwide at the box office and has left a huge mark on pop culture that still echoes throughout its rich genre today.

Goddard, an experienced screenwriter and director, has a great resume for someone looking to take on the reins of the franchise. He began his career in the 90s’ working on the popular Buffy The Vampire Slayer and worked on several other popular shows since, including David Lindelof’s Lost. He also created Netflix’s Marvel series ‘Daredevil’ and was an executive producer on the Netflix comedy series ‘The Good Place’.

The Matrix movies are hugely influential films in the landscape of cinema, ever since the first movie was released in 1999. While recent additions, may have been reason for fan disappointment, another sequel, if done right, would be very welcome.
